Tony Wakeford

After finding his musical feet in the legendary punk band Crisis and the (in)famous Death in June, Tony Wakeford has been releasing records under the name of Sol Invictus since 1987. His list of collaborators reads like a who’s who of the musical underground – Steven Stapleton (Nurse With Wound), David Tibet (Current 93), Matt Howden (Sieben) and Kris Force (Amber Asylum) – but Sol Invictus is an underground institution in itself. Sol’s music is a place where punk collides with chamber music, and industrial noises chitchat with folk tunes. Recurring lyrical themes deal with disillusion and doubt, ideals and cynicism, often drawing on Wakeford’s own life experiences.

An Idiot Awakes…..

Tony Wakeford,  man of letters, many of them begging, has joined the great blogaratti.  Try not to die of excitement as one man battles against all the customs of spelling and grammer. A blog that , if we were to channel H.P. Lovecraft, would be best described as conforming to no known vocabulary. You have been warned!

The Idiot Awakes

From:  http://tonywakeford.wordpress.com/

This is yet another attempt at running a blog. My last attempts caused even industrial strength spell and grammer checkers to book into Dignitas, so I’m not expecting to be here for long.
This should in theory follow the trials and tribulations of recording the next Sol Invictus album, provisionally titled “The Devil’s Year?” and due out via Prophecy (Home of the Hun), in 2013.

It may also describe to you the exotic world of budget airlines, dull hotels and never starting sound checks, that make playing in Sol Invictus and my new live project ”Twa Corbies” such a joy.

Twa Corbies is my and Gernot Munsch’s untalented Simon & Garfunkel, (Sarcy & Carbuncle?) take on my Sol and Solo flotsam.

No Red Seas

Brutal mass slaughters of dolphins take place every year in Japan and the Faroe Islands. It’s time for these cruel and outdated practices to stop. Here’s how to help end these senseless hunts.

I’m putting together a compilation album to raise money for Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, and I’m asking my musician friends to donate a track of their choice. I will put these together into a compilation – entitled NO RED SEAS – which will be available for download for a minimum price, and all profits will go directly to Sea Shepherd. And ‘all profits to Sea Shepherd’ means that pretty much all the money we raise will fund direct action to stop the killing. More about Sea Shepherd here: www.seashepherd.org

Maybe you saw the images of the annual massacre in the Faroes of hundreds of pilot whales (a misnamed dolphin species). They’re herded towards shore until they become stranded, where their arteries are slashed so that they bleed to death, turning beaches and seas blood-red. Or maybe you saw the pictures from Taiji in Japan of boats full of dolphin carcasses, after they are driven inland to be bludgeoned, stabbed and drowned. Or you might have seen the photo of the gutted dead dolphin with its unborn baby next to it – which for me sums up the futility and cruelty of these hunts.

I’m sick of seeing these images. I’m sick of the impotent rage they make me feel, sick of the tears, sick of the bad dreams, and sick of the sight of so much blood. I want no more red seas.

ANY QUESTIONS…?

- A compilation album?
I don’t expect or want contributors to incur any costs. If you want to create something new for this project that would be amazing, but I’ll be happy to accept all sorts of existing material – stuff you’ve recorded but haven’t really known what to do with, older material that you think deserves another lease of life – it’s up to you. Just whatever you think is worthy of the cause.

- Why Sea Shepherd?
Sea Shepherd have been taking direct action against illegal whaling, mass murder of dolphins, killing of seals for fur and human threats to marine wildlife since the 1970s. They have a long history of effective direct non-violent intevention and have done an enormous amount to turn public opinion against cruel and outdated practices that threaten species and habitats.
More info here on their dolphin campaigns: http://www.seashepherd.org/dolphins/

- I can’t contribute a track but I’d still like to help?
Just share this page on your facebook, forward it to anyone and everyone, and let as many people as you can know about it! And download the album, of course.

- Aren’t these ancient traditions that should be respected?
Local populations were historically dependent on sea mammals for food, but the time has come for these unnecessary and cruel hunts to stop. In any case the meat from whales and dolphins caught in these waters is so contaminated with mercury and toxic pollutants as to be mostly unfit for human consumption.

Any more questions?
Just ask!
